DO IN ESSENCE

Labin Art Express ( L.A.E. ), an independent underground (situated in a closed mine) art organization, was founded in 1991 by a dozen of young upstarts, not exclusively for artistic purposes. Since 1992, L.A.E. has organized and produced hundreds of exhibitions, concerts, plays, social and political actions, video works, several international theatre/dance and painting workshops/laboratories, two TRANSART festivals, and published a dozen of catalogues, books, two albums of Metal Guru, its artistic faction.

L.A.E. took part at the greatest international culture manifestations (EXPO '98, Cultural capital of Europe 1994, 1996, 2000), exposed and performed (solo and in collective) in the most famous European museums, galleries and halls. L.A.E. is an exogenous group that gathers all artists and non-artists who share their basic concepts of participation in the artistic process - the art today should be: young, all-encompassing, modern, cruel, moral and synthetic.

In 1993 they started L.A.E. Radio, the first independent radio station in Croatia, that was decreed shut by the government in 1996. With the support of the European Commission and under the auspices of the Council of Europe, in 1998 the Lamparna Cultural Centre was inaugurated, the first step towards the realization of the project, Underground City XXI - construction of an underground, futuristic city in the abandoned tunnels and halls of the Labin coal mine, with all the facilities a city has by definition, and modelled after the 1921 Labin Republic, with its own government.

The U-BITI project, which is to be presented at this year's Eurokaz is the work of Dean Zahtila, the co-founder of Labin Art Express and the multimedia group Metal Guru, and Xena L. Županić, model, actress and multimedia artist.

It is a fictional documentary performance inspired by three above-average talented young men from Labin that, after finishing high school, went to college to Zagreb , where the story comes to a tragic end. On February 12, 2005 , according to the (un)official police version, Massimo Kršulja(22) and Dragan Jung (23), tied their best friend Ante Vukelić (22) to a chair, and subjected him to torture with an axe. Seeking to flee the horror, Vukelić leapt out of a window and fell to his death. During the police investigation (which is still ongoing), Jung allegedly confessed to the murder of his grandmother's neighbour, Marija Knapić, aged 77, on May 20, 2001, in Labin, who died of over 30 knife stabs to her body. Kršulja and Jung are at present awaiting trial in Zagreb county jail.

The participants in the performance are 10 citizens of Labin, without any acting experience, who portray themselves, i.e. every one of them through their own view of the murder, by their behaviour, appearance, lamentations, build a story about Labin, a town of a bleak present, a carbonized past, with a possible underground and once again happy future, a town of anomalies - once the richest and today the poorest town in Istria, the town of Matija Vlačić and a town of art, a town with an abnormal percentage of mental disease, drug addicts, suicides, a town of an impossible mixture of cultures, with a closed mine in the centre of the town, surrounded by Mussolini's Raša, the Venetian old town and the completely devastated tourist town of Rabac.
