Sicilitudine (concert)

The Mancuso brothers, Enzo and Lorenzo, originally from the Sicilian province Caltanissetta , in the mid-seventies emigrated to London where they worked for eight years in the metal industry. In London they continuously work on the traditional music of their land, but influenced by a much more varied culture. Accepting the heritage of their neighbours, their music changes, fragments and becomes more complex.

They return to Italy in 1981 and settle down in Umbria , Citta della Pieve, where they live today. At the beginning of the eighties they present their music programme in small theatres of France and Germany, they are guests of cultural organisations and festivals of pop music. The crucial moment in their career is the acquaintance with Joaquin Diaz, Spanish musician with whom they record two LPs - Nesci Maria and Romancese se Alla y de Aca.

Film director Anthony Minghella uses parts of their CD Bella Maria as a sound background for the film The Talented Mr. Ripley and they also appear in the film as actors.

With Emma Dante they collaborate on the redecoration of the chorus for Euripides' Medea and compose music for the same opera.

By visiting other cultures, the Mancuso brothers confront and widen their musical experiences and views, but Sicily remains the base of their poetics. Memory remains directed towards myths, pagan and religious beliefs of their island.

At the concert named Sicilitudine, the Mancuso brothers will present works that rely on Sicilian rural tradition in the musical and thematic sense, and which are characterized by passion, simplicity, and a tenebrous lyric. They chant about bitterness of immigration, love, the past and culture menaced by oblivion and neglect.

Female figures in the centre of their poetic universe are celebrated as the incarnations of the mystery of creation, and profane love seems as if it is permanently coloured by mystic tones. Their concerts are, with their suggestive touch, more than just musical interpretation, they become a scenic game.
