LA FURA DELS BAUS BARCELONA,
SPAIN
XXX
Four continents from their very beginnings till
now. From 1979 when their vertiginous success started, to 1983 their
shows were connected to an aesthetic of street theatre, while later
they started to approach a direct action theatre aesthetic that uses
a wide range of stages and interactive strategies. Starting from
the concept of collective creation where the actor, author and director
switch their roles and become equally important or unimportant, they
created a so-called furero language addressing the audience and expecting
an active, dedicated role from them, many times based on the principle
save yourself who can. In the last decade of the 20th century the
group’s repertoire has taken the challenge of written drama and opera,
movie, internet streaming and also digital theatre where the dialogues
of characters are in interactive correlation with projections in
web site formats.
This is the third visit of La Fura to Eurokaz: in 1987 they presented
the piece Suz/o/Suz and in 1990 Tier
Mon.
XXX is Fura’s third piece based
on text and aims towards renewing, researching and revolutionizing
an erotic-pornographic genre in theatre.
The show is inspired by the novel "Philosophy In The Boudoir" by
Marquise de Sade, written in 1795 in which the French writer gives
a detailed introduction of a young woman into a world of sex and
metaphysical lust. Long before the birth of psychoanalysis, de Sade’s
piece brings to light the most hidden inclinations of human subconscious
and deliberates them from moral chains, permitting them to sail freely
in a state of high tension.
On the stage we can see four performers, a table and threatening
screen. This trip through modesty, perverseness and insanity touches
deeply de Sade’s world, his intellectual and philosophical background,
ingeniousness, cruelty and selfishness, but also the incomprehensible,
absolute fascination of viewing multiple shapes of sexuality around
us. In XXX, Fura’s creative power is serving the imagination and
beauty of Eros. It is a faithful but at the same time extraordinarily
modern and indispensable interpretation of De Sade’s radical world.
The audience, accepting the challenge to play with the erotic
genre,
participates in the creation of this orgiastic, energetic and disturbing
pamphlet, but cuts in the performance direct us to deep political
and eschatologically topical implications. XXX offers a vision of
violent sexuality based on a world where liberation from moral barriers
is Barthes's imperative of de Sade's archived future.
