CHURCH

directed by Saša Božić

May 21, 22, 26-29

June 5

Saša Božić, theatre director and dramaturge, has collaborated with well known European choreographers such as Isabelle Schaad (Germany), Simona Aughterloney (Germany), Francesco Scavette (Norway), Martina Pisani (France), Dalija Aćin (Serbia) and Iztok Kovač (Slovenia), while in Croatia he worked as a dramaturge in several rewarded performances of Zagreb Dance Ensemble and Theatre New Life.

In the performance Church, Božić continues his collaboration with actors from the Theatre New Life, one of the oldest European theatres of blind and sightless people, which offers unique performing energy, breaking borders of theatre and human prejudices. Professional actors will join New Life’s theatre ensemble for this occasion.

Church is a free adaptation of Young Jean Lee's latest play. Young Jean Lee is presently one of the most interesting authors of New York's theatre scene whose performance Church is considered her most „miraculous or monstrous experiment“ until today.

Božić's adaptation of Lee’s text takes as a directing starting point the power of rhetoric, performative elements of the theological allocutions free of religious contemplations, but counting on them as potential benchmarks of meanings. Church is structured as a sharp, shiny religious ceremony, designed to test the expectations of atheists as well as of believers. Through music, dance and preaching, four liberal agitators of Christianity with a sense of surrealism, are trying to answer the question – is it possible today to preach to those who are not converted?
